Do The Rules Still Apply?
I grew up in a time when fashion rules existed and were strictly enforced. Maybe not through fines and punishment but definitely through stares, points and scenes reminiscent of Mean Girls. In those times you were foolish to wear white before Memorial Day or after Labor Day, improper to wear a dress without a slip, and scandalous if you dared to step out of the house without wearing stockings. However in this modern day with so many people pushing the fashion envelope and taking their style to a personally catered level I ask, "Do the rules still apply?"
Excuse me, your bra is showing! - This faux pas is actually one of my favorite rules to break at the moment. With the surge of super cute bralettes and body suits, I'm breaking this rule all day! #sorrynotsorry
Gasp, white after Labor Day! - I once heard Joan Rivers say that only Puff Daddy can wear white after Labor Day. However the days of the white rule that sectioned off the summer from the fall made popular by Emily Post are over. That being said you still need to make sure your fabrics are season appropriate. An all white linen dress in December when it is 50 degrees outside is a huge violation and cold.
Mixing black with brown - I am one of those people who believe that cheetah is a neutral! There is nothing wrong with a mix of tan or brown with black accents. Another rule that I am breaking.
Denim on denim - We all remember that tragic day in 2001 when Brittany and Justin came out the house in those matching denim outfits! This one moment not only prolonged the rule of not wearing denim on denim but it made a list of rules for denim mandatory. So before you say no all together, there is hope as long as you:
1. Mix weights and washes - Don't do the exact same denim for your top and bottom.
2. Don't add denim accessories - Jeans and a top are cool. The problem starts with a denim hat, purse, scarf, etc. YOU ARE DOING TOO MUCH!!!
Be a lady, cleavage or legs never both - Another situation that requires a rule in the rule. I think you can pull off both but it must be done with care. Stretching the limits by not picking the right pieces will make you look like the "Lady of the Night". Watching location is also a factor. Please don't try this at the grocery store.
What do you think? Are there any fashion rules you plan to break this season?
